Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is one of the most common legumes in the human diet and there is a great need for its cultivation. Increasingly frequent droughts cause stress that leads to disturbances in growth and development and ultimately to reduced yields. The aim of this study is to analyze and determine the influence of drought stress on the morphological properties of common bean cultivar roots. Plants were grown on a pouch system, under controlled growth chamber conditions. Drought stress was simulated by adding polyethylene glycol (PEG 8000) to the nutrient solutions thus achieving a water solution potential of -1MPa. After five days of growing the plants in the drought treatment and in the control, the root of the plants was photographed. The obtained images were used to analyze the morphological characteristics of the roots using WinRhizo Pro software. Drought stress significantly reduced all measured morphological traits (root length, volume, surface area, average diameter, number of lateral axes and relative growth rate) except the number of root tips. Drought stress had greatest impact on the root length, volume, surface area, and thus these traits could be considered as most vulnerable traits to drought.
