Potato is one of the most important food crops for most of the world’s population and is highly vulnerable to abiotic stresses. As a result of climate change, a significant increase in temperature is expected in the coming decades, increasing the risk of high temperature stress, one of the most significant abiotic stresses. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of high temperatures on the parameters of chlorophyll fluorescence in potatoes. Chlorophyll fluorescence is one of the most widely used non-invasive methods for the assessment of the plant stress. For the purpose of the experiment, tubers of the Bella Rosa variety were planted. After germination, seven plants were selected for further grow in one of the four temperature treatments: 20/15°C, 25/20°C, 30/25°C and 35/30°C. After ten days, chlorophyll fluorescence parameters were determined. Measurements were performed by imaging the plants using a CropReporterTM (PhenoVation B.V., Wageningen, The Netherlands) device. Data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance (ONE WAY ANOVA) in the SAS statistical program. High temperature stress negatively affected most of the measured parameters of chlorophyll fluorescence except for the maximum efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm). Most affected were the values of the effective efficiency of PSII (Fq'/Fm') and the values of nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ). Where the value of Fq'/Fm' decreased with increasing temperature and the value of NPQ increased with increasing temperature. These results suggest that under the high temperatures potato has lower light use efficiency due to closure of PSII reaction centers and excess light energy is dissipated through the nonphotochemical quenching.
