Abstract

Cannabis sativa L. is a plant species which has been known to man since ancient history. At that time it represented a valuable source of fibre and food, and soon after that a type of a herbal medicine. Throughout the history, use of medicinal cannabis started to disappear from the conventional medicine. But with the discovery of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinolin the1960's it became a popular topic in the scientific circles. From that point, the number of researches on the topic of cannabis and his constituents is growing rapidly. Because of new information regarding its therapeutic potential some countries started programs for medicinal cannabis with an intent to stop patients from buying un-controlled cannabis from the street. This way the patients are provided with a medicine of proved quality and efficacy. Among those countries was Netherlands, which decided to start a production of medicinal cannabis inside the existing programme with the intent to reduce the price of the medicine and toenable exporting to other countries that already have a programme for medicinal cannabis. Because of its complexity, the production of medicinal cannabis is strictly regulated and ofteninspected. The production, which started in 2003, is the responsibility of the company calledBedrocan BV. Considering that cannabis is a plant well known for its reaction to growingconditions, it's being held in closed rooms with strict control of all growing conditions andhygiene. The process of standardization is a big part of the production process because itguarantees a product of the same quality and efficacy (same content of THC and CBD). Goodmanufacturing practice represents a group of guidelines that are a backbone for having asuccessful standardization process. The production can be divided into 8 stages: Propagationof genetic material, vegetation, flowering or production, harvest, drying, processing, packaging, distribution. All stages beside distribution and final packaging are theresponsibility of Bedrocan BV. Distribution is done by the Office of medicinal cannabis(OMC) that represents a part of the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport. In Croatia the useof medicinal cannabis is legal from 2015 and it's available in the pharmacies from July, 2016.The production will be possible if a change is made in the Law for drug abuse, that's in thejurisdiction of the Ministry of health.
