Abstract
Cijanobakterije ili modro-zelene alge su najstarija skupina fotoautotrofnih organizama na Zemlji. Poznato je oko 2000 vrsta svrstano u 150 rodova. Njihov talus može biti jednostaničan, kolonijalan ili višestaničan. Primarna staništa cijanobakterija su vodeni ekosustavi, ali mogu obitavati i izvan vode. Zapanjujuća je njihova sposobnost naseljavanja ekstremnih staništa, kao što su polarna područja, pustinje, vrući izvori te gole kamene podloge. Cijanobakterije su ubikvisti koji procesom fotosinteze i fiksacijom dušika obogaćuju staništa na kojima rastu i tako potpomažu naseljavanje složenijih organizama. Za brojne cijanobakterije je karakteristična simbioza s biljkama i životinjama.

Cyanobacteria or blue-green algae are the oldest phototrophic organisms on Earth. There is about 2000 species classified in 150 genera. They have unicellular, colonial or multicellular thallus. Primary habitat of cyanobacteria are water ecosystems, but they also exist out of water. Their capability to live on extreme habitats is amazing, as are polar areas,deserts, hot springs and bare stone surfaces. Cyanobacteria are ubiquists which enrich their habitats through photosynthesis and nitrogen fixation and support colonization of other more complex organisms. Symbiosis with animals and plants is characteristic for many cyanobacteria.
