Abstract
Telomere su jedinstvene strukture na krajevima kromosoma potrebne za genetsku stabilnost stanice. Pri replikaciji stanične DNA dolazi do skraćivanja telomera zbog uklanjanja zadnje početnice na tromom lancu i nemogućnosti polimerizacije "de novo" krajeva kromosoma pomoću DNA polimeraze. Za spriječavanje kritičnog gubitka telomera, odgovoranje enzim telomeraza. Telomere i telomeraza su važne u biologiji tumora i starenja. Mjerenje aktivnosti telomeraze se koristi u dijagnostici tumora, dok se njena inhibicija pokazala kao nova metoda u liječenju tumora. Skraćivanjem telomera u normalnih stanica dolazi do senescencije. Eksprimiranjem telomeraze je moguće produljiti telomere te produžiti životni vijek stanice. Modernim istraživanjima se pokušava isto postići na razini cijelog organizma.

Telomeres are unique structures at the ends of the chromosomes crucial for genetic stability of the cell. Telomeres shorten in the process of DNA replication due to inability of the DNA polymerase to synthesise DNA chain "de novo". Telomere synthesizing enzyme is called telomerase. Telomeres and telomerase are important in cancer biology and aging. Telomerase activity measurement can be used in cancer diagnosis. Telomerase inhibition canbe effective method in cancer therapy. Telomere shortening in normal cells leads to senescence. Telomerase expression can lead to telomere elongation, which in term can lead to extended lifespan. Recent investigations aim to achieve these characteristics on the entire organism scale.
