Abstract

Parallel abstract (English)
Family cormorants (Phalacrocoracidae) is the most numerous family in order Suliformes, class of birds (Aves). Considering cormorants are at the top of the food chain, they are indicators of biological diversity inland water and marine ecosystems. Three species belonging to cormorants family (Phalacrocoracidae) are breeding in Croatia. Breeding population of great cormorants (Phalacrocorax carbo) prevails in the area of the continental Croatia, along the Danube and Drava. Shag (Phalacrocorax aristotelis) breeds in northern Adriatic: on the shores of Istria, the Kvarner islands, Silba reefsand Zadar archipelago. Pygmy Cormorant (Microcarbo pygmaeus) regularly breeds in the area of Vrana Lake, and irregularly at Donji Miholjac, Grudnjak and Jelas ponds, and in Kopački rit and Lonjsko polje. A Great cormorants and sea cormorants have stable breeding population trend, while trend of breeding population of pygmy cormorantis decreasing.
