Abstract

Parallel abstract (English)
Ectoparasits of birds and mammals, lice, are grouped into single order, Phthiraptera. This order comprises about 5000 species classified in four suborders. The blood sucking lice (Anoplura) are one of the smallest suborders of Phthiraptera order, with 543 described species. Fauna of lice (Phthiraptera, Anoplura) in Croatia is poorly researched and is known only 14 species. Of these species, two were recorded as species that attack humans. These are the species of Pediculus humanus and Pthirus pubis. Pediculus humanus has two subspecies, the body louse, Pediculus humanus corporis and head louse, Pediculus humanus capitis. Numerous studies have been made and results has been shown that the body louse is vector for many diseases, of which the most important role throughout history have relapsing fever, trench fever and epidemic typhus.
