Abstract

The Rook (Corvus frugilegus L.) is a resident bird that belongs to the Crows family (Corvidae).Despite the fact that Rook was a typical bird of the steppes, it's numbers in urban areas are nowadays increasing. The aim of this study is to explore the wintering and breeding population of Rooks in Osijek town during winter 2013 and spring 2014. During 2013/2014 winter from 1000 to 4000 Rooks gathered in Osijek town, on trees in the Pleasance of king Tomislav and on the surrounding trees in the European Avenue. During 2014 902 pairs in 13 colonies bred in Osijek town. Majority of the colonies(10) were classified as small (below 50 pairs), with average of 24.5 nesting pairs. The largest two colonies in Osijek wider area are in Vuka village as well as in Kneževo in Baranja, whose Rooks are known to be roosting in Osijek town. In the past 22 years, the breeding population trend shows moderate decline, mainly because of the harrassement of the colonies, nest destruction and disturbanceof breeding Rooks
