Abstract

Demographic change of decreasing and aging population in the European Union significantly affects the change of labor supply, and thus on economic growth. To prevent future decline of economic growth should be compensated in the population of working age. One way is by employing older workers, since it is not possible to expect higher compensation of migration flows, as they are mainly focused on the richer countries of the European Union. Starting the projection of the population and their effects on the change in labor supply, and the overall economic growth. In Croatia has already started to demographic changes in the labor supply, which would be in the future further deepened. They are very similar demographic trends that are occurring in newer EU member states. Croatia is among the countries with the strictest employment protection legislation in Europe. Redundancies have been expensive and difficult, and flexible forms of work are limited. High long-term unemployment and employment is falling. For the employer is an expensive closing unproductive job. New job is rare because employers do not seek to employ new workers in order to avoid the costs of their release. The result is a decrease in employment and an increase in unemployment, largely due to the entry of new job seekers who cannot find work in the labor market.
