The paper explains the reasons and possibilities of building a passive house in Istria. It presents a historical overview of the development of passive houses and building standards that must be respected, in order to illustrate the possible savings that contribute to the preservation of nature and environment. It then reviews basic principles of building passive houses and the use of renewable energy sources as well as building materials that are also environmentally friendly. The significance of house orientation as part of the maximized utilization of solar energy is stated. The principles of independent photovoltaic systems are described and an example of how the author created a solar collector that can be mounted on the roof of the house is shown. As water provision in the living space is one of the main needs, the author explains the basic principles of water collection and storage and describes an example of a self-made calabash water tank. A calculation for the septic tank for a family of four is presented as well as the proposal for wastewater management and with the aim of reducing the cost of it’s emptying and achieving the autonomy of the home. Furthermore it was clarified how to manage waste by composting. After describing the system in the household, an overview of possible building materials and their properties such as industrial hemp and straw is given. The reinforcement, the composition of the composite, the insulation and the legal regulations are explained, and the advantages and simplicity of the construction are clarified. The model depicts how a passive house looks like and describes how to set up its systems. Istria's climatic values favour the construction of passive houses. The work ends with the methodological part that elaborates the teaching of technical culture in fifth grade of the elementary school and presents the content of a lesson about the subject of technical culture, methodological unit: materials.
