The topic of this paper is the possibility of resistance and rebellion in transitional plays of Miroslav Krleza, that is, U logoru, Vucjak and Golgota. In said plays Krleza moves away from the mythical framework of his earlier ones and focuses on thematizing the referential reality of the period when he was writing them – the last days of World War I and the events that followed immediately after its end. That being said, one also needs to bear in mind Krleza’s personal experience of war. In his transitional plays Krleza also leaves behind the characters of extraordinary individuals while underscoring the need for collective action. These plays are linked to his earlier ones by the reminants of expressionism reflected in the symbolic names of the characters, biblical intertext, visions and dreams as well as the depiction of the world as a place of chaos. The question at the core of his transitional plays is one of social and political change, i.e. who should bring that change about and in what manner. Resistance and rebellion against existing power structures manifest themselves in different ways: from doubts and internal turmoil, insubordination, rejection of discipline and desertion, to concrete and organized revolutionary action. In the play U logoru, the character of Gregor serves as a vessel to showcase Marxist ideas and his escape to Russia as a place of revolution and new possibilities, as well as to shake the loyalty of the Croatian people to foreign rulers. In Vucjak, the revolutionary potential of the Green Cadres is pointed out, despite them lacking a clearer political and ideological leadership. Revolution is identified as the only chance for profound change in Golgota as well.
