Abstract	This thesis comprises five annotated translations, accompanied by a discussion. Excerpts from three books were translated from English into Croatian (This is Going to Hurt. Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor by Adam Kay, The Translation of Children's Literature. A Reader edited by Gillian Lathey and Quantitative research methods in translation and interpreting studies by Christopher Mellinger and Thomas Hanson), and two from Croatian into English (Uvjerljivo drugi by Sven Popović and Narodni preporod u Istri by Antoni Cetnarowicz). The discussion focused on functionalist approaches to translating in different textual genres with examples from three of the translations (This is Going to Hurt, The Translation of Children's Literature and Uvjerljivo drugi). Translations of the aforementioned excerpts were analysed with regard to Reiss and Vermeer's Skopos Theory, Reiss' text typology and Christiane Nord's translation-oriented text analysis and the function plus loyalty principle in order to examine their usefulness in translating literary and academic texts.
Abstract (croatian)	Diplomski rad sastoji se od pet prijevoda popraćenih bilješkama, nakon kojih slijedi rasprava. Isječci triju knjiga prevedeni su s engleskog na hrvatski (This is Going to Hurt. Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor Adama Kaya, The Translation of Children's Literature. A Reader zbirku radova koju je uredila Gillian Lathey i Quantitative research methods in translation and interpreting studies Christophera Mellingera i Thomasa Hansona), a dva su prijevoda s hrvatskog na engleski jezik (Uvjerljivo drugi Svena Popovića i Narodni preporod u Istri Antonia Cetnarowicza). Rasprava je usredotočena na funkcionalističke pristupe prevođenju u različitim tekstualnim žanrovima s primjerima iz tri prijevoda (This is Going to Hurt, The Translation of Children's Literature i Uvjerljivo drugi). Prijevodi navedenih tekstova analizirani su s obzirom na Skopos teoriju Katharine Reiss i Hansa Vermeera, tipologiju teksta Katharine Reiss te analizu teksta Christiane Nord usmjerenu na prevođenje i pojam lojalnosti u smislu odgovornosti prevoditelja prema ciljnoj publici, kako bi se pokazala njihova korisnost u prevođenju književnih i akademskih tekstova.
