Abstract
The accelerated way of living, without sufficient exercise, coupled with pollution and jeopardised physical and psychological health, progressively gave rise to the necessity of compensating such unsatisfied needs.Wellness tourism is considered one of the most important trends of the decade because it no longer exclusively retains the treatment of pre-existing diseases but also encourages proactive changes. Many definitions or opinions of what wellness means share a main re-appearing idea: wellness is very important, if not crucial, to individuals’ health and the enhancement of their quality of life. Currently popular concept of wellness in tourism opens many future possibilities in Croatia and Opatija. Opatija is known for its long history and rich tradition especially in health tourism. With understanding of historical development of tourism and health tourism in Opatija through different periods, starting from the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy to present-day circumstances the potential for further development of this modern subdivision of health tourism (wellness) is reviewed. In this paper opportunities but also shortcomings in development of Opatija as a wellness destination, giving a perspective on future of wellness in Opatija.
