Introduction: Empathy is an important prerequisite for building good relationships between the health care professional and the patient. It is expressed through an attitude towards others and includes understanding, support and positive emotions. Empathy is a skill which is learnt and developed during one's lifetime. Aim: The aim of this thesis was finding out opinions and attitudes of medical nurses/technicians about empathy in connection to working with chronic kidney disease patients at the Institute of Nephrology, Dialysis and Kidney Transplantation of the Clinical Hospital Centre in Rijeka by conducting a survey. Hypotheses had been formulated: H1 – Working with chronic kidney disease patients is stressful H2 – Medical nurses are more emphatic than medical technicians Methods: The data for this research paper were collected through a survey carried out at the Clinic for Internal Medicine, Institute of Nephrology, Dialysis and Kidney Transplantation of the Clinical Hospital in Rijeka. The survey was created individually and adapted for dealing with kidney disease patients. The subjects participating in the survey were solely medical nurses/technicians; health care professionals of the Institute.The survey was conducted in May, 2019. Results: The processed data were presented through diagrams with a description of the results obtained. Conclusion: The hypothesis H1 is accepted - Working with kidney disease patients is stressful for nurses/technicians who work with them on an everyday basis. The hypothesis H2 is rejected - Medical nurses are more empathic than medical technicians; an alternative is accepted instead:There is no difference in the level of empathy between medical nurses and technicians.
