Abstract (english) Introduction: Multiple sclerosis can be defined as chronic, inflammatory, autoimmune, neurodegenerative disease which results from damage to the central nervous system. The cause of the disease is unknown, but it is assumed that the interaction of certain factors causes the disease. The first symptoms usually occur at the age of 20 to 50. Symptoms associated with multiple sclerosis are numerous, and sometimes very difficult and uncomfortable for the patient, so it is very important to perform physical activity to reduce certain symptoms and improve the quality of life of an individual as much as possible.
Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the impact of exercise on physical pain and headache in MS patients. The research was conducted at the Association for Multiple Sclerosis in Rijeka, and included 24 patients with MS, namely 13 participants who performed the exercise and 11 participants who did not exercise. Most of them had a relapsed - remission form of MS. There were more women than men participating in the study, which confirms the fact that MS is two to three times more common in the female population.
Participants and methods: The exercise program consisted of breathing exercises, stretching exercises, exercises to increase the range of movement, muscle strength, balance and coordination. Exercises were performed twice a week for 60 minutes during 8 weeks (total 16h). During exercise, the dumbbells and elastic straps were used. Questionnaires were used to evaluate the participants: MIDAS, VAS, SF - 36 and a self – assessment questionnaire on the impact of exercise on the health and motivation of MS patients.
Results: After the statistical analysis, the difference between the results before and after the exercise program was found in the form of reduction of headache, physical pain and increased motivation for physical activity, although the difference was not statistically significant.
Conclusion: Therefore, it can be concluded that the 8-week exercise program is useful in treating MS patients with the purpose of reducing symptoms and improving the overall quality of life of an individual.
