Abstract	U današnje vrijeme potreba za razvojem tehnologije omogućila je polimernim materijalima skok na vrh ljestvice ekonomske isplativosti ne obazirući se pritom na posljedice nagomilavanja polimernog otpada na odlagalištima otpada. Polimerni materijali su velik problem zaštite okoliša, sve su veće opterećenje za okoliš te je važno poznavanje načina pristupa problemu, a primarno je poznavanje sastava procesa nastajanja kao i podjela pojedinih polimernih materijala. Polimerni otpad je najzastupljeniji u kućanstvu, zato je isplativ za recikliranje i oporabu. Postavlja se pitanje što s nastalim polimernim otpadom? Rješenje se nalazi u dobrom odabiru metode zbrinjavanja polimernog otpada. Oporaba PET-a opisana je na primjeru tvrtke “Drava International” d.o.o. iz Osijeka. Recikliranjem i oporabom PET-a i polietilena dobivaju se proizvodi koji služe kao ambalažni materijali za namirnice ili kao ambalaža koja nema direktnog doticaja s prehrambenim proizvodima.
