Abstract
U radu se iznosi djelovanje hrvatskoga svećenika, profesora, historiografa i rektora Matije Mesića u 19. stoljeću. U razdoblju hrvatske nacionalne integracije, Mesić je imao važnu ulogu u unapređivanju prosvjete, a to je činio sastavljanjem školskih udžbenika na narodnom jeziku i sudjelovanjem u brojnim školskim povjerenstvima te austrijskom Nastavničkom vijeću. Kao profesor i posljednji ravnatelj Pravoslovne akademije, radio je na preustroju iste u zagrebačko sveučilište, kojemu je bio i prvi rektor. Svojim historiografskim raspravama unaprijedio je hrvatsku povijest, koja je postupno prerastala u znanstvenu disciplinu. Ujedno je bio jedan od najaktivnijih članova središnjih hrvatskih kulturnih ustanova – Matice ilirske i Jugoslavenske akademije znanosti i umjetnosti.
Abstract (english)
This paper deals with the activites of the croatian priest, professor, historiographer and rector Matija Mesić in the 19th century. In the time of croatian national integration, Mesić played an important role in the improvement of education, which he did by compiling school textbooks in croatian language and by participating in numerous school commissions and the Austrian Teaching Council. As a professor and last director of the Pravoslovna akademija, he worked on reshaping the same at the University of Zagreb, where he was also the first rector. Through his historiographic discussions, croatian history has been improved, which was gradually shifting to scientific discipline. He was also one of the most active members of the central croatian cultural institutions – Matica ilirska and Jugoslavenska akademija znanosti i umjetnosti.
