Abstract
Cilj istraživanja bio je opisati tehniku prazne stolice i proces unutar tehnike iz perspektive psihoterapeuta i klijenta. U istraživanju je sudjelovalo 10 psihoterapeuta i 9 klijenata s kojima su provedeni polustrukturirani dubinski intervjui. Za potrebe istraživanja konstruirane su dvije verzije pitanja prilagođene psihoterapeutima i klijentima. Provedene su dvije odvojene tematske analize za psihoterapeute i klijente. Tematskom analizom podataka psihoterapeuta utvrđeno je šest tematskih područja: Jedna tehnika bezbroj mogućnosti, Susret praznih stolica, Kad se psihoterapeutove i klijentove ruke slože, Pogled unutar psihoterapeuta, Bolje spriječiti nego liječiti i Dvije strane medalje. Tematskom analizom podataka klijenata utvrđeno je šest tematskih područja: Tehnika prazne stolice riječima klijenta, Kad se problem stavi na dvije stolice, Susret praznih stolica, Kad se psihoterapeutove i klijentove ruke slože, Pogled unutar klijenta i Tehnika prazne stolice-mogućnost promjene. Psihoterapeuti su tehniku su najčešće koristili u radu s polaritetima, odnosima s drugom osobom i nedovršenim poslovima. Iz dobivenih rezultata proces unutar tehnike prazne stolice podijeljen je na četiri faze odnosno upoznavanje sa stranama i ulazak u uloge, dijalog strana, razrješenje/nerazrješenje te asimilacija i integracija doživljenog iskustva. Psihoterapeuti i klijenti su izvještavali o širokom rasponu osjećaja i misli koje su im se javljale tijekom procesa te su smatrali da imaju aktivnu ulogu u procesu odnosno da svaka strana na svoj način pomaže da se proces odvije. Nadalje, psihoterapeuti su istaknuli i negativne posljedice tehnike kao što su sram, retraumatizacija, produbljivanje konflikta i gubitak motivacije klijenta. Poznavanje klijenta i postojanje terapijskog odnosa, procjena, praćenje klijenta i prilagođavanje eksperimenta samo su neki od čimbenika koji sprječavaju negativne posljedice tehnike. Naposljetku, i psihoterapeuti i klijenti su smatrali kako je tehnika uspješna, ali da njezina uspješnost ovisi o različitim čimbenicima kao što su vještine i znanja psihoterapeuta te osobine ličnosti i motivacija klijenta.
Abstract (english)
The aim of the research was to describe the empty chair technique from psychotherapist’s and client’s perspective. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 psychotherapists and 9 clients. For the purpose of the research, we constructed two modified versions of the questionnaire for psychotherapists and clients. We carried out two separate thematic analyses, for psychotherapists and for clients. Based on the thematic analysis of the psychotherapists' responses we identified six broader themes: One technique endless possibilities, Empty chairs encounter, Many hands make light work, Inside psychotherapist’s mind, Better safe than sorry and Two sides of the same coin. Based on the thematic analysis of the clients' responses we identified also six broader themes: Empty chair technique in the words of the client, Problem on two chairs, Empty chairs encounter, Many hands make light work, Inside client’s mind, Empty chair technique-possibility of change. Usually, psychotherapists have used empty chair technique for working on polarities, relationships with other people and unfinished business. According to our findings process underlying empty chair technique was divided into four phases: Getting to know the sides and getting into the roles, Dialogue, Resolution/non-resolution and Assimilation and integration of the experience. Psychotherapists and clients reported a wide range of feelings and thoughts that emerged during the process and they felt that they had an active role in the process. Further, psychotherapists also highlighted negative consequences of the technique such as shame, retraumatization, deepening conflict and loss of client’s motivation. Psychotherapists reported some factors that could prevent negative consequences such as knowing the client, therapeutic relationship, psychotherapist’s judgment and experiment attunement. Lastly, both psychotherapists and clients considered the empty chair technique successful, but its success depended on psychotherapist’s skills and knowledge and client’s personality and motivation.
