Acne vulgaris is a multifactorial dermatosis with complex pathogenesis that affects the pilosebaceous unit. It is one of the most common skin diseases in general. The factors involved in the occurrence of the disease are numerous, such as genetics, hormones and bacteria. It most often occurs on the face, and less frequently affects the neck, shoulders, back and sternal region. Acne vulgaris affects 80-85% of adolescents and young adults and an average duration of the disease is five years. Acne was, until recently, considered as a disease reserved for an adolescent population. However, there is an increase in the incidence of acne in adulthood, especially in women. The age limit for the definition of acne in adulthood is 25 years. In many cases, acne in adulthood is a continuation of the disease from the adolescence, but there can also be a relapse or the first appearance of acne after 25. Acne more often appears in women in adult life, a clinical picture develops gradually and the severity is mild or moderate. The most common clinical presentation are inflammatory lesions - papules, pustules and inflammatory nodules, which are mostly found on the lower part of the chin and along the lines of the jaw and the neck. It is assumed that etiological factors in the development of acne in adulthood include the influence of hormones, the menstrual cycle, genetics, drugs, ultraviolet radiation, climate, stress, smoking and diet. The treatment of acne in adulthood presents a real challenge and requires long-term maintenance therapy. Acne in adults can have extremely negative psychosocial impact on the affected person, acting on his or her confidence, and thus indirectly affects patient's emotional, family and business life.
