Abstract
An important application of semiconductor lasers is in optical communications systems where the transmitted signal is usually encoded as an intensity modulation of the output light. The bitrate of information transfer is limited by the bandwidth, a range of frequencies beyond which the response falls below the noise level. Compared to their conventional counterparts, spin lasers oer advantages over their conventional counterparts in the form of a lowered lasing threshold and a wider bandwidth. Those desirable properties of spin lasers are analyzed in this thesis using a rate-equation model, describing their macroscopic dynamics. The analysis of the steady-state regime is followed by the investigation of the dynamic operation of spin lasers, using the small signal analysis and taking into account the eects of nonlinear gain and nonzero spontaneous emission contribution to the output light.
