Abstract
U Istočnoj Aziji, jednoj od jezgara urbanog razvoja, danas živi skoro 1/4 svjetskog stanovništva, a od toga stanovništva više od 50 % živi u gradovima. Regiju karakteriziraju značajne fizičkogeografske i sociogeografske razlike koje su utjecale na njen urbani razvoj od prethistorije do danas. Obilježja urbanog razvoja država Istočne Azije slična su kao i u većini slabije razvijenih zemalja: prenaseljenost, izražene migracije iz ruralnih u urbana područja, loši uvjeti rada, slabo razvijena komunalna infrastruktura, ekološki problemi itd. Iznimka je Japan koji po stupnju gospodarskog razvitka prednjači ne samo u Istočnoj Aziji nego i u svijetu. Stvaranjem takvih pritisaka na okoliš neophodno je uskladiti održivi razvoj s gospodarskim jer onečišćenje prirode o kojoj ovisimo, za razliku od gradova, ne poznaje granice niti ima rok trajanja.
Abstract (english)
Eastern Asia, one of the core centres of urban development, is inhabitated by almost a quarter of world´s population, more than half of which live in urban areas. Throughtout time urban development in the region was influenced by many physical and socio-economic factors. Characteristics of urban development in all countries od Eastern Asia are similar to those in less developed economies: high rates of population density by square mile, migrations from rural to urban areas, poor working conditions, poorly developed utility infrastructure, environmental issues etc. Japan is the only exception because, with its economic development, it is the leader of the region and one of the most developed countries in the world. Environmental issues are becoming more important and strongly affect large economies. Finding out how countries can incorporate sustainable development into their economical goas is the key because pollution unlike cities does not have physical boundries.
