Abstract
Fasciolijaza je važna crijevna bolest uzrokovana metiljima Fasciola hepatica i F. gigantica. U Europi, Americi i Oceaniji ističe se samo F. hepatica, ali obje vrste su rasprostranjene u mnogim područjima Afrike i Azije. Konačni raspon oboljelih je vrlo širok i obuhvaća mnoge biljojede, uključujući i ljude. Životni ciklus uključuje slatkovodne puževe kao središnjeg domaćina tog parazita. U svijetu su u posljednje vrijeme procijenjeni gubici u produktivnosti životinja zbog fasciolijaze na više od 3,2 milijarde dolara godišnje. Osim toga, fasciolijaza je danas priznata kao ljudska bolest. Svjetska zdravstvena organizacija procjenjuje da je 2,4 milijuna ljudi zaraženo metiljima iz roda Fasciola, a još oko 180 milijuna su u opasnosti da se razbole.
Abstract (english)
Fasciolosis is an important helminth disease caused by trematodes Fasciola hepatica and F. gigantica. In Europe, the Americas and Oceania only F. hepatica is a concern, but the distributions of both species overlap in many areas of Africa and Asia. The definitive host range is very broad and includes many herbivorous including humans. The life cycle includes freshwater snails as an intermediate host of the parasite. Recently, worldwide losses in animal productivity due to fasciolosis were conservatively estimated at over US$3.2 billion per annum. In addition, fasciolosis is now recognized as an emerging human disease. The World Health Organization has estimated that 2.4 million people are infected with Fasciola, and a further 180 million are at risk of infection.
