Abstract	Serotonin je biogeni amin čija su struktura i načini signalizacije visoko konzervirani među vrstama. Rasprostranjen je u centralnom živčanom sustavu i periferiji te ima različite funkcije ovisno o vrsti tkiva u kojem djeluje. Relativno nedavno počela se otkrivati važna uloga serotonina u komunikaciji između živčanog i probavnog sustava te njegove mikrobiote, tzv. microbiota-gutbrain axis - MGBA. Poremećaji u serotoninskom signaliziranju mogu dovesti do nepravilnih funkcija komponenata osovine i obrnuto, što može dovesti do različitih bolesti i sindroma, i u centralnom živčanom sustavu i na periferiji. Istraživanje ovog složenog komunikacijskog sustava još je u povojima, ali gotovo svakodnevno dolazi se do novih saznanja koja doprinose njegovom razumijevanju. Velik broj istraživanja usmjeren je ka proučavanju signalnih puteva između komponenata osovine i serotonina kao glavnog medijatora. Buduće terapije za neke bolesti mogle bi se temeljiti upravo na održavanju balansa između MGBA i serotoninskog sustava.
Abstract (english)	Serotonin is a biogenic amine and its structure and signaling pathways are highly conserved amongst the species. It is widely distributed in central nervous system and in the periphery, and displays various tissue-specific functions. The role of serotonin in communication between nervous system and the gastrointestinal tract with its microbiota (microbiota-gut-brain axis - MGBA) has been discovered quite recently. Disruptions in serotonin signaling can cause dysregulation of axis components, and vice versa, which can lead to various disorders and conditions, both in central nervous system and in the periphery. Studying this complex communication system is still in its infancy, but new findings, which contribute to its understanding, occur almost on a daily basis. A great amount of research is now directed towards studying signaling pathways between axis components and serotonin as a main mediator. Future therapeutic interventions for some conditions could be based on maintaining the balance between MGBA and serotonergic system.
