The impact of the upper airways on the lower airways has been a subject of extensive research over the last century. The term united airways indicates their interaction. The possible mechanisms of this interaction are nasobronchial reflex, postnasal drip and resorption of inflammatory mediators in the circulation with a consequential effect on the lungs. The inability to breathe through the nose makes conditioning of the air difficult, which leads to a negative effect on the lower airways. The treatment of the upper respiratory tract has a major impact on the treatment of diseases of the lower respiratory tract, particularly asthma in children and adults. The granulocyte activation markers and IgE in sinus lavages, and the inflammatory and IgE + cells counts were significantly higher in the asthmatic. The tryptase concentrations did not differ, but only in the asthmatics they correlated significantly with the IgE concentrations and IgE+ cells count. Subjective scores were decreased after therapy in both groups of patients and without correlation with objective parameters of inflammation. In accordance with these results conclusion is that asthmatic patients present a distinct subgroup among the patients with chronic rhinosinusitis.
