The planning of fixed prosthodontic therapy is inevitable, whether it is a single tooth replacement or a complete oral rehabilitation. Prosthodontic appliances should meet both functional and aesthetic requirements of the patient. Today, the emphasis is on the aesthetics, and patients already have an idea of their future smile when they come to the dentist’s office. However, sometimes it is not possible to meet the patient’s expectations due to the limitations of the profession and materials, and it is important the patient realizes this before starting any therapy. The treatment plan starts with a thorough medical history. It is necessary to achieve a quality communication so that the dentist and the patient could understand each other better. This is followed by a clinical examination and X-ray analysis to assess the condition of the oral cavity. It is necessary to bring the patient as close as possible to the appearance of the ensuing prosthodontic appliance, which can be done conventionally, using a model (wax-up) and a provisional template (mock-up). Therapy can also be planned digitally, twodimensionally in softwares such as Digital Smile Design or three-dimensionally in a CAD/CAM program. The decision on the treatment plan is made cooperatively by both the patient and the dentist. Often the existing condition of the oral cavity needs to be treated before starting the prosthodontic therapy, which requires a interdisciplinary approach to each patient.
