This work shows the importance of (creative) working with poetry in the first four years of primary school. It brings an overview of relevant literature on the subject of children's poetry and poetry teaching. The work starts with explaining the most important features of children's poetry. After that, the process of poetry teaching is explained where the emphasis is on the impact poetry has on children. The teacher's role is shown to be of great importance here - he himself has to be creative in order for his teaching to be creative, too. It is also explained how creativity has an important role in primary education. The second part of this work consists of examples of creative activities that can be done with children when dealing with poetry. These activities enable children to play with poems, to become explorers and they make children laugh. At the end, one poetry lesson is presented - transcription of the lesson, pictures of childen's work, the analysis of the work, transcription of the conversation about the lesson and the analysis of it. The lesson and the reactions of the pupils show that children can enjoy poetry and that they love to play with poems. Therefore, this work emphasises such an approach to teaching poetry in schools - an approach which is close to children and their world. The main purpose of the work is to point out that teaching poetry is very important in primary education and to show that the approach to teaching poetry can be a creative one.
