Abstract
Applying the feminist gaze theory, this diploma thesis investigates the notion of the gaze in the film Lolita by Stanley Kubrick. Made after the notable Nabokov’s novel, the film Lolita depicts middle-aged man’s fascination with a fourteen-year-old girl. In many scenes, the gaze plays a vital role in conveying the meanings of the film. The issues explored are the pleasure of looking, voyeurism, fetishism, gendered power relations, and audience identification with the central protagonist, Humbert Humbert. Presupposing that Humbert represents an active male subject whom spectators mostly identify with, this thesis examines Lolita’s position as a passive object of the male gaze. Thus, Kubrick’s directing has the potential to position the audience to abuser’s perspective. Specifically, this thesis investigates the visual and narrative devices that Stanley Kubrick employs telling the story of a vulgar paedophilic man.

Primjenjujući feminističku teoriju pogleda, ovaj diplomski rad istražuje pojam pogleda u filmu Lolita Stanleyja Kubricka. Snimljen prema istaknutom Nabokovljevom romanu, Lolita prikazuje opčinjenost čovjeka srednjih godina četrnaestogodišnjom djevojčicom. U mnogim scenama, pogled igra bitnu ulogu u prenošenju značenja filma. Razmatrana pitanja su užitak gledanja, voajerizam, fetišizam, rodni odnosi moći i poistovjećenost publike sa središnjim protagonistom, Humbertom Humbertom. Pretpostavljajući da Humbert predstavlja aktivnog muškog subjekta s kojim se gledatelji najviše poistovjećuju, ovaj rad ispituje Lolitin položaj kao pasivong objekta muškog pogleda. Tako Kubrickovo režiranje potencijalno pozicionira publiku u perspektivu zlostavljača. Konkretno, ovaj rad istražuje vizualne i narativne postupke koje Stanley Kubrick koristi prenoseći priču o vulgarnom pedofilu.
