Abstract
This thesis was concerned with the analysis and postcolonial critique of the TV series Homeland. The main question which appeared in this thesis is whether the TV series Homeland deliberately used fixed, preconceived notions about the East, discussed in Edward Said’s Orientalism, or did it try to deconstruct stereotypical notions. The focus of the thesis, that has a tendency to deconstruct orientalist discourse in this TV series, was put on representations of space, gender, and race in the TV series, having in mind the ways of constructing identity and representation of “Us” and “Them” (the difference between the United States of America and the Middle East). The representations of space, race and gender were analysed in detail considering notions of discourse, stereotyping, identity and orientalism. The thesis confirmed the continuation of negative aspects of postcolonial stereotypes.
Abstract (croatian)
Ovaj diplomski rad bavio se analizom i postkolonijalnom kritikom televizijske serije Domovina. U radu se postavlja pitanje koriste li se u seriji ustaljene, unaprijed stvorene pretpostavke o Istoku (preuzete iz Orijentalizma Edwarda Saida) ili se stereotipne pretpostavke pokušavaju dekonstruirati. Cilj rada bio je analizirati prikaze prostora, rase i roda u navedenoj televizijskoj seriji, imajući u vidu načine konstruiranja identiteta „Nas“ i „Njih“ (razlike između Sjedinjenih Američkih Država i Bliskog Istoka). Prikazi prostora, rase i roda detaljno su analizirani u odnosu na pojmove diskursa, stereotipizacije, identiteta i orijentalizma. Rezultati pokazuju kako su u prikazima i dalje prisutni negativni aspekti postkolonijalnih stereotipa.
