Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to analyse the way in which themes of sexuality, gender, gender identity and gender roles were (re)presented within the fantasy/action/drama series Xena: Warrior Princess (1995-2001). In order to complete this aim, the paper also refers to a related concept of gender stereotypes, as well as reflects upon factual information regarding lives of women in ancient Greece, which is the time frame during which the plot takes place. The results show that the series managed to successfully give the viewers an idea about life during the aforementioned time period, while simultaneously exploring many modern-day topics in both an entertaining and thought-provoking manner.
Abstract (croatian)
Svrha ovog rada je analiza načina na koji su u seriji Xena: Warrior Princess (1995- 2001) prezentirane teme seksualnosti, roda, rodnog identiteta i rodnih uloga. Da bi se to postiglo, u radu se također istražuje pojam rodnih stereotipa, kao i stvarni život i položaj žena u doba antičke Grčke, što je period u kojem se odvija radnja serije. Rezultati analize pokazuju da je u seriji uspješno dan prikaz života u dotično doba, dok su paralelno obrađene i brojne moderne teme, i to na način koji gledatelje istovremeno zabavlja i potiče na razmišljanje. Treću točku razmatranja predstavlja priroda odnosa između Xene i Gabrielle, dviju protagonistica serije, koja se kroz šest sezona postupno mijenjala.
