Abstract
The process of colonization had such an influence on the word that it re-created the world's map. Its consequences are visible even today, especially in the way people perceive the West and the East. Postcolonial theory is the discipline that deals with its complex consequences, which are due to imperial discourse sometimes hardly noticeable. This paper presents the analysis of the book Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe through postcolonial theory and the concepts such as mimicry, hybridity, othering, ambivalence and difference. The aim of this work is to describe the representation of social changes that happened to the native LGBO society through the imperial perspective. The special emphasis is on the changes regarding culture, language, religion and identity. This paper shows that the author challenges the imposed hierarchy due to the fact that he does not write from the colonizer's point of view.
Abstract (croatian)
Proces kolonizacije je imao toliko veliki utjecaj da je promijenio kartu svijeta. Njegove su posljedice vidljive čak i danas, posebno u načinu na koji ljudi vide Zapad i Istok. Postkolonijalna teorija je disciplina koja se bavi njegovim kompleksnim posljedicama koje su, zbog imperijalističkog diskursa, ponekad neprimjetne. Ovaj rad predstavlja analizu knjige Things Fall Apart autora Chinua Achebe kroz postkolonijalnu teoriju i koncepte poput mimikrije, hibridnosti, drugosti, ambivalentnosti i razlike. Cilj ovog rada je opisati reprezentaciju socijalnih promjena koje su se dogodile domaćoj Igbo zajednici kroz imperijalističku perspektivu. Poseban naglasak stavljam na promjene vezane za kulturu, jezik, religiju i identitet. Zbog činjenice da ne piše iz perspektive kolonijalizatora, ovaj rad pokazuje da autor izaziva postojeću hijerarhiju.
