Abstract
Euphemisms are used when unpleasant and disturbing topics are discussed and for the purpose of making the conversation easier both for the speaker and the listener. There are different classifications of euphemisms which lead us to a particular area of euphemisms, and that includes euphemisms related to crime. In this thesis the usage of crime-related euphemisms found in several British and American newspapers is analysed. The analysis covers 27 articles from different newspapers and diverse newspaper sections. Both crime-related euphemisms used in references to actual crimes, as well as crime-related euphemisms which are used in articles that do not deal with any form of criminal acts are analysed in this paper. When they are used in articles regarding crimes, euphemisms are used in order to emotionally distance the reader from the bad news that can be read in the newspapers, or, at least to a certain extent, to draw the reader’s attention away from unpleasant news.
Abstract (croatian)
Eufemizmi se koriste kada je riječ o neugodnim ili uznemirujućim temama. Razlog njihove uporabe je olakšavanje razgovora sugovornicima. Postoje različite klasifikacije eufemizama koje vode do zasebnog područja eufemizama, a to su eufemizmi vezani uz kriminal. U ovome se radu analizira uporaba eufemizama vezanih uz kriminal u britanskim i američkim novinama. Analiza obuhvaća 27 članaka iz različitih dnevnih novina i raznih novinskih rubrika. Analiza uključuje kako eufemizme u člancima vezanima uz stvarne zločine, tako i eufemizme vezane uz kriminal koji se nalaze u člancima koji se ne bave kriminalnim djelima. Kada se koriste u člancima vezanima uz kriminal, eufemizmi se koriste kako bi emocionalno udaljili čitatelja od loših vijesti koje se mogu pročitati u novinama, ili kako bi barem djelomično skrenuli čitateljevu pozornost sa neugodnih vijesti.
