Abstract
The topic regarding the representation of female detectives in literary works but also in TV shows has been present for years now. The way many writers, directors and producers choose to depict female characters, as well as the role they occupy, has brought many questions about the female position in the world, especially in the fields of so-called male occupation. The task of this paper was to analyse the role of three female detectives, Kate, Lilly, and Jessica, in contemporary American TV’s crime dramas Castle, Cold Case, and Jessica Jones. This paper examined the way in which female detectives are depicted considering their gender, sex, identity, relation to masculinity and femininity and their relationship with the male part of the crime investigation community. The study showed that three detectives defy gendered stereotypes and beliefs to a certain extent. They refuse to act in accordance with society’s will and need and they challenge boundaries which have been made during years. However, by changing already learned rules, three detectives are still submitted to the hidden role of victims which decreases their independence and subjects them to traditional values and beliefs.
Abstract (croatian)
Tema portretiranja detektivki ne samo u književnim djelima, već i u TV emisijama, prisutna je već godinama. Način na koji mnogi scenaristi, redatelji i producenti prikazuju ženske likove kao i ulogu koju oni zauzimaju donio je mnoga pitanja o položaju žena u svijetu, posebno na područjima takozvanih muških zanimanja. Zadatak ovog rada bio je analizirati ulogu tri detektivke, Kate, Lilly i Jessice u suvremenim američkim TV kriminalističkim dramama Castle, Cold Case i Jessica Jones. Ovaj je rad istražio način prikazivanja detektivki s obzirom na njihov spol, identitet, odnos prema maskulinitetu i feminitetu te njihov odnos s muškim dijelom detektivske zajednice. Istraživanje je pokazalo da se tri detektivke odupiru rodnim stereotipima i uvjerenjima do određene mjere. One se odbijaju ponašati u skladu s voljom i potrebama društva te osporavaju uvjete stvorene tijekom godina. No, promjenom već ustanovljenih pravila, tri su detektivke i dalje podvrgnute skrivenoj ulozi žrtve što umanjuje njihovu neovisnost i podvrgava ih tradicionalnim vrijednostima i vjerovanjima.
