Abstract
This paper focuses on two selected novels by Kate O'Brien, The Ante-Room and Without My Cloak. It tries to analyse how O'Brien represents Irish women in the 19thcentury or, in other words, how they were treated by Irish society. Moreover, women’s role in both family and society is also examined. The first chapter explores historical background: 19th century events such as Great Famine, emigration, etc., as well as the position of women determined by de Valera's Constitution. In the second chapter, the influence of the family on the life of a woman is examined relying on Althusser's theory of Ideological State Apparatuses. The last two chapters deal with the representation of women and men and analyses the main themes which are present in the novels. The aim of this paper is to analyse women represented by Kate O'Brien and examine fictional characters and how they reflect Irish society of the time.
Abstract (croatian)
Ovaj rad bavi se izabranim romanima The Ante-Room i Without My Cloak irske književnice Kate O'Brien u kojima se nastoji analizirati uloga žene u irskom društvu. Prvo poglavlje daje uvid u velike događaje iz 19. stoljeća koji su bitni i u romanima, kao što su Velika glad, emigracija te položaj žene određen Ustavom de Valere. U drugom poglavlju opisan je utjecaj obitelji na odluke pojedinca oslanjajući se na Althusserove teorije. Nadalje, irske žene i muškarci iz romana opisani su u sljedećem poglavlju iza kojeg odmah slijede motivi i teme relevantni za to razdoblje. Cilj ovog rada je analizirati žene kako ih prikazuje Kate O'Brien te istražiti na koji su način likovi u romanu odraz 19.stoljeća i realnog stanja iščitivajući romane. Zaključak analize ovoga rada je da se žene nisu mogle oduprijeti snažnom utjecaju Crkve i obitelji te da su se ponašale u skladu s njihovim pravilima.
