Abstract
The paper deals with examining the relationship and difference between the two main accounts of language acquisition – the nativist and the usage-based approach. The observed evidence is mainly of syntactic nature. The aim of the paper is to reach the final decision on which theory is more adequate in its account of language acquisition. Several main arguments of both accounts are examined and challenged from the standpoint of the opposing one. Likewise, Jackendoff’s Parallel Architecture is also looked at because of its contribution to explaining the way language is processed. After the evidence within syntax and certain alternative explanations have been analysed, the usage-based account seems like a more adequate theory of language acquisition.
Abstract (croatian)
U radu se ispituje odnos i razlika između dvije glavne teorije o usvajanju jezika – nativističkog i uporabnog pristupa. Dokazi pritom korišteni su uglavnom sa područja sintakse. Glavni cilj rada je zaključiti koji od ova dva pristupa adekvatnije opisuje postupak usvajanja jezika. Nekoliko glavnih argumenata korištenih od obje strane su istraženi i ispitani sa suprotnih perspektiva. Osim toga, Paralelna Arhitektura Raya Jackendoffa je također promotrena zbog svog doprinosa u objašnjenju načina na koji se jezik procesuira. Nakon analize dokaza unutar sintakse te analize određenih alternativnih pristupa teoriji usvajanja jezika, uporabni pristup se čini kao adekvatnije objašnjenje usvajanja jezika.
