Abstract
The aim of this thesis is to analyse the narrative of transgender representation within the films Boys Don’t Cry (1999, dir. Pierce) and Transamerica (2005, dir. Tucker). This thesis argues that the representation of transgender individuals shifted from the gender transgression narrative (focus on pathologization and deviant otherness) to the one that exploits the theme of gender transition (focus on medicalization and corporeality). The analysis shows that though there has been an evident shift in the representation of gender diverse people film narrative still employs the themes of pathologization and medicalization, but what lacks is the authentic portrayal of transgender lived experience. These stereotypical narratives rely on the revealing of the material body and genitals in order to reinforce gender norms and heteronormative ideology. Despite the growing visibility and presence of trans people in popular culture and media discourse, there are very few sustained examinations in film narrative of what it actually means to embody the gender different from the one assigned at birth.

Cilj ovog rada je analizirati narativ transrodne reprezentacije na primjeru dva filma, Boys Don't Cry (1999, dir. Pierce) i Transamerica (2005, dir. Tucker). U radu se tvrdi da je došlo do pomaka u reprezentaciji transrodnih osoba sa narativa prijestupa kategorije roda (sa naglaskom na patologizaciju i devijantnu drugost) na narativ koji eksploatira temu prijelaza iz jedne rodne kategorije u drugu (sa naglaskom na medikalizaciju i tjelesnost). Analiza ukazuje na činjenicu da unatoč evidentnoj promjeni u reprezentaciji rodno „različitih“ osoba filmski narativ još uvijek eksploatira teme patologizacije i medikalizacije, te se izostavlja stvarni prikaz transrodnog iskustva i autentičnosti. Ti isti stereotipni narativi se oslanjaju na prikaz i otkrivanje tijela i genitalija sa ciljem potvrđivanja rodnih normi i heteronormativne ideologije. Unatoč sve većoj prisutnost transrodnih osoba u popularnoj kulturi i medijskom diskursu, analiza pokazuje da je reprezentacija ostala dosljedna stereotipiziranim prikazima transrodnih osoba sa izrazito malo sustavnog prikazivanja što zaista znači utjeloviti rod suprotan onome dobivenom rođenjem.
