The goal of the thesis is to describe the military operation „Bljesak“ which lasted from May 1st to 4th, 1995. The thesis is comprised of several chapters which describe the political and historical context of the conflict in the Republic of Croatia from 1991. to 1995. The chapters further describe the causes and the emergence of the Serb insurgency, and the conduct of defense by Croatian forces against the enemy. Moreover, the thesis provides an overview of the experiences gained during the operation. Its goals were to defeat the enemy forces in the area of Western Slavonia, to liberate the occupied teritory, to clear and repair the freeway in order to secure unimpeded traffic, as well as to establish a defensive line on the right bank of the Sava river, along the state border with Bosnia and Hercegovina. The importance of operation „Bljesak“ was shown three months later, during operation „Oluja“. By conducting these operations, and subsequent smaller ones, the Republic of Croatia demonstrated its determination to establish control over its entire teritory to the international community and its neighboring states. The results of operation „Bljesak“ were the liberation of 600 square kilometers of occupied teritory, and high enemy losses in manpower and equipment.
