Alcohol abuse affects millions of individuals around the world. Alcohol consumption, in addition to causing increased social and economic costs, also disturbs the health of the patient, which is increasingly caused by alcohol consumption, causing severe liver damage. Alcoholic liver cirrhosis is a chronic liver disease caused by long-term alcohol consumption. It is associated with pronounced morbidity, mortality, and shortening life expectancy. The weight and the prognosis of the alcohol-induced liver disease depend on the amount, sample and duration of alcohol consumption, as well as the presence of liver inflammation, nutrition, nutritional status and genetic predisposition of the individual. Liver cirrhosis is associated with elevated concentration of angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) in patients with I / D polymorphisms of ACE genes. ACE catalyzes the hydrolysis of angiotensin I in angiotensin II which is a potent vasoconstrictor, so it can be the cause of hypertension, stroke, diabetic nephropathy and so on. The aim of this study was to determine whether genetic predisposition to liver cirrhosis occurs in individuals with different ACE genotypes. The study included 128 patients with alcoholic cirrhosis and 128 healthy patients. The frequency of II, ID and DD genotypes, and I and D alleles and controls, and in men and women were compared. The study did not establish a statistically significant ratio among the respondents to the groups regarding ACE I/D genotypes and alleles (p≥0,05). At the end of the study, it can be concluded that the genetic polymorphism I / D in ACE gene has not shown a possible predisposition to the development of liver cirrhosis in our patients, although further research with a larger number of subjects is needed to reach final conclusions.
