Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder among women of reproductive age. Although it has diverse clinical presentation, main signs and symptoms of PCOS are as follows: excess androgen, chronic anovulations and polycystic morphology of the ovaries. These signs and symptoms also represent the core of diagnostic criteria. According to some studies, women with PCOS are at higher risk for pregnancy and delivery complications. Clinical research studies show that pregnant women with PCOS are more likely to have miscarriage in early pregnancy, gestational diabetes, preeclampsia and pregnancy induced hypertension. Also, there has been noted more common preterm birth, C – section, higher perinatal mortality rate and higher rate of neonatal intensive care unit admission in PCOS patients than in control women. Lifestyle changes, body weight reduction, quitting smoking and physical activity have shown significant role in reducing obstetric risks in pregnant women with PCOS. According to some studies the use of metformin has shown good therapeutic results in gestational diabetes treatment, preventing early pregnancy loss and preeclampsia. Nevertheless, there aren’t any standardized guidelines for preventing and treating obstetric complications in PCOS women.
