Since multiple sclerosis is a progressive and chronic disease, rehabilitation, as well as exercise programme, have an important role in therapy. When included in the process of training and exercise, a patient gains better physical condition. The patient and his/her family are educated in regards of the disease and how to prevent future complications. Since multiple sclerosis is considered to be a disease with a thousand faces because its symptoms are different and hard to predict, the exercise programme should be individualized, and different stages of the disease should be taken into consideration. The manifestation itself depends on localization of lesions in the central nervous system – medulla spinalis, cerebellum or cerebrum. Multiple sclerosis develops in 3 stages: a phase of exacerbation, a phase of remission and a phase of progression. The treatment includes a general plan of rehabilitation and curing of symptoms. For prevention of further progression of the disease, the first choice in therapy is corticosteroids. In patients suffering from multiple sclerosis an important component of treatment program is therapeutic exercise. Rehabilitation should be started as soon as possible and constant evaluation should be made during the process of rehabilitation so that progress can be measured. Regular exercising can improve motor movement, decrease pain, prevent contracture and mobilize motor strength.
