Abstract

Parallel abstract (English)
Carob (Ceratonia siliqua L.) is a typical evergreen subtropical fruit. Although production of the carob has a very long tradition in Croatia, today it is unfortunately, a forgotten fruit. The main reason of that condition of carob cultivation is the abandonment and decay of carob culture with the lack of interest in its industrial processing. Carob never had the meaning it deserves, therefore is more work on the popularization and introduction of good properties of this plant needed. The purpose of this study was to gather information, determine pomological characteristics of local phenotypes of carob and to determine the differences between these phenotypes, as well as compare them with research by other authors for the purpose of their identification. The study has shown revealed significant differences between all phenotypes for each investigated property. Phenotype of Rogačić area showed the greatest weight and length of pods, while the phenotype of Podstražje area showed the lowest weight and the length of pods. On the other hand, phenotype of Rukavac area showed the greatest width and thickness. Minimum width had a phenotype Komiža 1, and minimum thickness phenotype Vis 2. The average number of seeds per pod ranged from 9.91 to 15.73.
