Abstract	Probiotici su živi organizmi koji mogu imati pozitivan učinak na zdravlje. Koriste se u brojnim granama medicine, a najčešće za bolesti gastrointestinalnog trakta. U dentalnoj medicini su pozitivni učinci zabilježeni kod karijesa, kandidijaze, halitoze i parodontnih bolesti. Parodontne bolesti su skup bolesti koje dovode do gubitka potpornog aparata zuba, a u težim oblicima i do gubitka zuba. Terapijom izbora kod parodontnih bolesti se smatra mehaničko odstranjivanje supragingivnih i subgingivnih naslaga. Kao dio adjuvantne terapije se mogu koristiti probiotički proizvodi. Najčešće se koriste probiotici iz rodova Lactobacillus i Bifidobacterium, a vrsta L. reuteri se za sad pokazala najučinkovitijom. Djeluje antibakterijski i protuupalno. Brojna istraživanja ukazuju na korisne učinke probiotika, te se stoga preporučuje njihova upotreba kod bolesti parodonta
Abstract (english)	Probiotics are living organisms that can have a positive effect on health. They are used in many branches of medicine, most commonly for diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. In dental medicine positive effects have been reported in cases of caries, candidiasis, halitosis and periodontal diseases. Periodontal diseases are set of diseases that lead to loss of the tooth supporting tissues, and finally to tooth loss. The treatment of choice for periodontal diseases is considered to be mechanical removal of supragingival and subgingival biofilm accumulations. Probiotic products can be used as part of adjunctive therapy. Probiotics from the genera Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium are most commonly used, and L. reuteri species have so far proved to be the most effective. They have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Numerous studies indicate the beneficial effects of probiotics, therefore their use in periodontal disease may be recommended
