Varaždin County is trying to solve the problem of permanent waste disposal together with other counties of north-western Croatia, by founding the regional centre for waste management in the area of Koprivnica-Križevci County. Regarding the distances to the regional landfill, it is necessary to select the sites of waste transfer stations as a connection between the place of waste collection and its final landfill. The goal of research is to determine optimal locations of waste transfer stations in the area of Varaždin County, by using geographic information system (GIS) and analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method, based on the existing spatial-planning documentation and space evaluation based on determined criteria. For the selection of optimal location of waste transfer stations, it is necessary to determine and elaborate relevant criteria, as well as to determine relative importance of some criterions with the aim of objectively multi-criteria valorisation of the space. Regarding the set criteria and characteristics of the county, it is important to determine the number and arrangement of transfer stations, in order to reduce the total expenses of the waste management system in Varaždin County. Paka and Beretinec were selected as optimal locations, but due to the comparative advantages, Beretinec was proposed as unique location for the waste transfer station of the entire county.
