This thesis meticulously examines the introduction and evolution of a model for direct mayoral elections in the Republic of Croatia, providing analysis of its integration into the local election system and the subsequent changes and outcomes. The primary objective of this study is to elucidate the progress of the model itself and assess its alignment with initial expectations. The evaluation of model's outcomes is grounded in extensive data collected from the past four elections spanning from 2009 to 2021, sourced from publicly available election records and research papers. This data is statistically evaluated, and presented in tables and charts, highlighting metrics that include the proportion of independent candidates in the roster, voter turnout, and the success rate of elected independent candidates. By providing a detailed analysis of these metrics, this thesis aims to provide insights into the outcomes of the Croatian model variant. Furthermore, the thesis delves into the concept of direct local elections, exploring the rationale and motives driving its adoption, its incorporation into Croatian legislation, and an explanation of its initial objectives. In the conclusion, the evaluation of the collected data is provided, the model's success rate is assessed, and the research question regarding whether the incorporation of the model for direct mayoral elections decreased party politicization is addressed.
