Abstract	Uključenost mikroorganizama u patogenezu pulpnih i periradikularnih bolesti dobro je poznata. Endodontsku infekciju potrebno je liječiti kauzalno, eradikacijom mikroorganizama iz sustava korijenskih kanala i stvaranjem okoliša u kojem bakterije ne mogu preživjeti. Mehanička instrumentacija korijenskih kanala, kojom se uklanja nekrotično i inficirano tkivo te oblikuje kanal glavni je dio endodontskog zahvata, međutim nije sposobna ukloniti sve uzročnike i dezinficirati kanal bez upotrebe različitih medikamenta, tekućina za ispiranje i intrakanalnih uložaka. Nerijetko je endodontska infekcija popraćena osjećajem boli, u tom slučaju potrebno ordinirati neki od analgetika, ovisno o razini boli. U težim slučajevima endodontska infekcija može biti praćena oticanjem mekih tkiva i pojavom sistemnih znakova infekcije što zahtijeva propisivanje antibiotske terapije.
Abstract (english)	The involvement of microorganisms in the pathogenesis of pulp and periradicular diseases is well known. Endodontic infection needs to be treated with causal therapy, by eradication of the microorganisms from the root canal system and by creating environment in which bacterium are unable to survive. The mechanical root canal instrumentation, which removes necrotic and infected tissue and shapes the canal, is the main part of endodontic treatment, however it is not capable of removing all pathogens and disinfecting the canal without using various medicaments, irrigating solutions and intracanal dressings. The endodontic infection is often followed by pain, therefore it is necessary to ordinate one of the analgesics, depending on the level of pain. In severe cases endodontic infection can be followed by swelling of the soft tissues and systemic infection signs which require prescribing an antibiotic therapy.
