Music is present in a large number of everyday situations and as such it has a massive impact on our willing and unwilling but as well on our psychophysical state. Music has always played a vital role in social or cultural happenings of all importance such as birthdays, weddings, funerals, etc. In this paper I will discuss and compare different genres of music that have been shaped throughout a largetime period such us: classical, rock, pop music, latinamerican music and modern music which is nowadays very popular in the Balkan area. Although recognition of quality of music is determined through centuries of affirmation, it also demands a personal feeling for beauty. A feeling for beauty and music preference in children is mostly determined by school, family, peers and mass media. Research show that preschool children don’t have prejudices towards any genre of music unlike children of school age and adults which shows that parents and teachers have a great responsibility in presenting genres to children to form their taste in music. Research in this paper focuses on musical preferences of preschool children who have been a subject to active listening test of 5 different genres by tracking their following response (emotional reaction, dance moves, number of children who participate, quantity of repetition and answers based on the character of music and their recognition of these test songs) to each genre that has been played to them. Beside children, teachers have also filled out the questionnaire which gave out information about their preferences in music and also information about which genre they mostly use in kindergartens. Results of this research have shown a clear connection between music preferences of children towards a certain genre and frequency of that genre being played to them by teachers. There are some irregularities in results which can be credited to uncorrupted children point of view towards something new or unknown.
