Abstract (english) Osteoporosis is a metabolic disease with a progressive course and asymptomatology, which also makes a major public health problem with socio-economic consequences and poorer quality of life of the patient. It is characterized by a decrease in bone mass caused by various external and internal factors. Females are more prone to the disease because during menopause there is a reduced secretion of the sex hormone estrogen, which leads to a hormonal imbalance in the body, but despite this, men can also suffer from osteoporosis. This disease mainly affects the middle to older population due to the specific pathophysiology where in a certain part of life during the process of bone remodeling resorption of old bone cells so-called. osteon takes place faster than the construction of new cells which makes the bone weaker and prone to fractures. Fractures are one of the more serious problems of osteoporosis because they cause a reduced quality of life of the person, limit them in daily activities and can lead to mortality. Other risk factors that affect bone remodeling and the development of osteoporosis are the use of tobacco products, consumption of alcoholic beverages, inactive lifestyle, reduced intake of calcium and vitamin D in the body. Given that the life expectancy of the population is increasing, the number of people with osteoporosis may increase over the years. Therefore, it is necessary to take prevention measures at all three levels - primary, secondary and tertiary in order to ensure the highest possible quality of life in the population and reduce the incidence of the disease. Physiotherapy procedures play an important role in the prevention, treatment, reduction of complications and education of the patient and the general population. Also, this paper contains a study conducted in the Republic of Croatia, which shows the situation about the level of education of our residents about osteoporosis, the number of patients among the respondents and the importance of education.
