Abstract (english) Attitudes towards rape represent opinions and beliefs about the act of rape, the perpetrator and victim of rape. Research shows that society often justifies rape, reduces the guilt of perpetrators and does not show enough empathy for victims. Previous research has shown that culture, social norms, customs and experiences of individuals can play an important role in forming attitudes. In view of the above, the aim of this study was to examine some of the potential predictors of attitudes towards rape. According to the theoretical basis, the study included dimensions of attachment (anxiety and avoidance), dark triad personality traits (Machiavellianism, narcissism and psychopathy) and ambivalent sexism (hostile and benevolent sexism) as rape correlates and predictors. In addition, the relationships of some relevant socio-demographic and contextual factors with attitudes towards rape (gender, age, field of study, love status, place of growing up and religiosity) were examined. 513 Croatian male (N = 153) and female (N = 360) students participated in this study. To answer the posed problems, we used the Brennan's inventory of experiences in close relationships, the Short Scale of the Dark Triad, the Field Scale of Attitudes Toward Rape and the Ambivalent Sexism Scale which was validated on a sample of Croatian students who participated in this study. Regarding relevant socio-demographic and contextual factors, the results show that male students, technical and natural sciences students and religious students express more positive attitudes towards rape, while a statistically significant association of age and love status with attitudes towards rape was not found. Furthermore, in terms of personal and experiential factors, it was found that participants with more pronounced machiavellian, narcissistic and psychopathic traits have more positive attitudes towards rape. In addition, hostile and benevolent sexism were found to be positively associated with attitudes toward rape. On the other hand, no statistically significant association was found between the dimensions of attachment (anxiety and avoidance) and attitudes towards rape. Finally; gender, Machiavellianism, psychopathy, and hostile sexism have been shown to be significant predictors of attitudes toward rape, which together explain 40% of the variance in attitudes toward rape.
