The imbalance in supply and demand of labour in terms of occupation, qualifications or regional planning has been present in Croatia for a long time. The consequences of unemployment are reflected in a series of difficulties faced by individuals and society as a whole. Unemployment in the Republic of Croatia draws its roots from the beginning of the transition to a democratic political system, and the consequences of the Croatian War of Independence. After the war, unemployment was very high, and ever since Croatia has failed to address changes in macroeconomic policy and structural reforms and has failed to tackle corruptionandgreyeconomy. Over the past two decades, public officials in Croatia have tried to tackle this staggeringly high unemployment rate, which did not yield satisfactory results. The analysis of available data on the number of unemployed people and the unemployment rate show that unemployment in post-war Croatia was rising rapidly. Then, at the time of global economic 4 crisis in 2007 unemployment started to fall and then started to grow again only a few years later. Data show that this trend is turning and that unemployment should continue to decline despite all the bad predictions regarding emigration and ageing of the Croatian population.
