During the year 2018. an experiment on the effects of nitrogen top-dressing was conducted with Burley tobacco on the Maksimir experimental field at the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Zagreb. The experiment was set up according to the RCBD in four replications. Standard agrotechnical for Burley tobacco were implemented, except for the top-dressing. Nitrogen is added to the top-dressing in five different variants: 1. Control of 100 kg/ha of KAN; 2. 90 kg/ha of KAN + 10 kg/ha of microcapsules; 3. 80 kg/ha of KAN + 20 kg/ha of microcapsules; 4. 90 kg/ha of KAN + 10 kg/ha of microcapsules with chitosan and 5. 80 kg/ha of KAN + 20 kg/ha of microcapsules with chitosan. Planting was done manually on May 24, 2019. with F1 hybrid BH 4. The number of leaves, the length and width of the 9th leaf, the height of the plant after topping, were determined on a sample of 10 plants during the vegetation, and on the whole plot days to flowering. The leaves were hand-picked in 8 harvests and air-dried in the shade. After drying, the yield (kg/ha) was determined and the tobacco is classified into six classes. From chemical compounds, the content of nicotine was determined in the dry middle leaves of tobacco. The conducted statistical analysis of variance showed significant differences in tobacco yield and the shares of sixth-class. The significantly highest yield (2 796,93 kg/ha) was recorded in the control variant. The largest sum of shares of the highest quality classes (I, II, III) was recorded in the control variant (52,26%) and the variant of 90 kg/ha KAN + 10 kg/ha of microcapsules with chitosan (52,28%). The longest 9th leaf (51,50 cm) and plant height after topping (107,33 cm) were recorded in the control variant.
