Abstract

Gardens and gardening, have a very important role in the life of a man, both in terms of production, as well as a place of recreation and education. School gardens for children develop a healthy relationship towards food, environmental awareness, working habits. They used to be an integral part of the school yard and had a prominent place in the school curriculum, especially in rural areas. City district Sesvete, throughout its territory, is located outside the boundaries of the city of Zagreb as a settlements. Even a few decades ago the biggest part of the area marked distinctly rural way of life, elements of which are still clearly visible in most of the local settlements. Industrialization and with it related immigration of thousands of new residents are primarily, in the mid 60s, encouraged rapid urbanization then still small Sesvete and other independent settlements. On the whole area there are 4 municipal and 5 private pre-schoolsand several elementary schools. The objectives of this study were to establish the existence of gardens with educational institutions in the field of city district Sesvete, assess the size, inventory and describe the elements of the garden, and identify plant species, and to assess the arrangement of gardens and their compliance with the tradition and the area in which they are located. The study selected 10 gardens, divided into 2 groups: TYPE 1 - pre-school garden andType 2 - the school garden, in the period between April 2013 and May 2014. The average area of the garden TYPE 1 is 5407 m2, and in type 2 16 990 m2. Inventory is observed greater number of plant species in the gardens TYPE 1, and in both types prevailed ornamental plants with the greatest abundance of shrubs and trees. It can be concluded that modern educational gardens do not have the characteristics of old traditional gardens but took on a contemporary and modern forms, and the main reason is the impact of urbanization, changes in trends in the design and selection of plant species.
